Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency and open source software project released under the MIT/X11 license. Creation and transfer of coins is based on an open source cryptographic protocol and is not managed by any central authority. Litecoin was an early bitcoin spinoff or altcoin, starting in October 2011.

Measured by market capitalization (or the amount of currency on the market), litecoin is the third-largest cryptocurrency after bitcoin and XRP.

Like bitcoin, litecoin is a form of digital money. Utilising blockchain technology, litecoin can be used to transfer funds directly between individuals or businesses. This ensures that a public ledger of all transactions is recorded, and allows the currency to operate a decentralised payment system free from government control or censorship.

Litecoin, with more coins issued, may have more liquidity than Bitcoin—but the scarcity of Bitcoin may make it more valuable. The prices of Bitcoin and Litecoin are notoriously volatile, but Bitcoin's price is consistently orders of magnitude higher than the price of Litecoin.

Litecoin is a peer-to-peer (P2P) virtual currency, which means it is not governed by a central authority. Litecoin's network offers instant, near-zero cost payments that can be conducted by individuals or institutions around the globe.
