What is Litecoin?
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:27:23 PM »
What is Litecoin?

Litecoin is the result of some of us who joined together on IRC in an effort to create a real alternative currency similar to Bitcoin. We wanted to make a coin that is silver to Bitcoin's gold.

Litecoin manages to maintain the unique traits and attributes of Bitcoin, while adding to the mixture CPU-specific mining and a 2.5 minute block rate. This means that Litecoin doesn't have to compete for the used up computational cycles of your graphics card if you're already mining Bitcoins, but can work independently on your processor.

We'd like everyone to get their chance at being an "early adopter", so we've preannounced Litecoin several days ahead of launch day for you to be able to prepare your mining setup on our Testnet. There have also been no more than two blocks mined ahead of release; the genesis block followed by a block to verify it.

Update:
-LTC is mainly mined with GPUS (Reaper was first GPU miner, now even cgMiner supports LTC mining with GPU)
-CPU mining isnt profitable if you pay for electricity.
-LTC suffers cause BTC miners jump in to mine with their rigs when difficulty is low and leave LTC when it rises.
-These days biggest pools  gets DDOS time to time. Remember P2Ppools can secure LTC-network :D

Litecoin version 0.8.5.1 was released in November 2013. The release included fixes for vulnerabilities and added enhanced security to the Litecoin network.
The Litecoin developer team released version 0.8.6.1 in early December 2013. The new version offered a 20x reduction in transaction fees, along with other security and performance improvements in the client and network. The source code and binaries were released early to people in the "#litecoin" IRC channel, on the official Litecoin forums, and on reddit, with information for power users to add a Litecoin supernode to the configuration file, while the main site was to be updated after enough of the network was running the new version. This release method was used to ensure that the low fee transactions from version 0.8.6.1 clients would not be delayed by clients running older versions.
In April 2014, a new version of Litecoin was released, version 0.8.7.1, which fixed some minor issues along with an important fix related to the heartbleed security bug.

Litecoin is built around Scrypt algorithm, where the limiting factor is memory, not processing efficiency. Litecoin as "Silver Bitcoin". It works almost similar to Bitcoin. It recently implemented an update called  Segregated Witness or SegWit, to increase blockchain block size limits and provide other improvements to Litecoin’s scalability.

Eliminating banks and other financial intermediaries from needing to be at the center of every financial transaction was Satoshi's goal & main purpose, and he achieved it with Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency in the form of electronic cash it is a decentralized currency without a central bank.
