[Guide] 6 GPU Litecoin Mining Rig | 6x R9 270
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:56:20 PM »
After a few days of research over on the bitcointalk forums, I've put together a build guide for a 6 GPU mining rig capable of mining roughly 50 Litecoins each month at the current difficulty and exchange rate.

6x 7950 Litecoin Mining Rig Guide

I picked the 7950 since it has the best $ to hash rate value at the moment and also uses less power than the 7970. Going forward, getting the best watts to hash rate value will be increasingly important (unless you get free electricity)  :)

Edit 11/21/2013: Based on today's Litecoin mining difficulty and price point, a rig like this will generate ~$600 worth of Litecoin per month (in USD).

Edit 12/27/2013: Due to unprecedented demand for the 7950 GPU, they are virtually impossible to find. I've updated the guide using the AMD R9 270 as an alternative as well as adding the new ASROCK motherboard designed specifically with GPU mining in mind. This rig is now a 2,700Kh/s rig that will cost $1,800 to build netting you over $500/mo in Litecoin at current difficulty/exchange rates.

Feel free to give feedback here or on the site, especially anything that can improve this guide for others. Thanks!

Next year might not be as profitable for Litecoin mining. Fortune favors the bold.  :D

I have 7850's x8 of them.

Very nice guide.

With prices going up like these it's making it very profitable

best $ to hash rate value title still stand for the 7950's? This guide still relevant? Im considering a litecoin rig. Got about $2200 for a budget right now but ive been completely sleeping on litecoin so i came here for a lil guidance. I got an os, hdd, box fan and ddr3 so i have a small head start. How is my timing? is building this rig a good idea right now?

Yes. 7950s are still the best. As far as whether now is a good time to mine, that's a decision you'll have to make. To help you determine this, I'd recommend using a litecoin calculator like this: https://www.litecoinpool.org/calc. Personally, I'm very happy with the $125/mo worth of Litecoin each of my 7950s have generated over the last few months, but there are no fixed price guarantees when it comes to mining. If I had $2200 and was just getting started, I'd probably build a 4 GPU rig using the guide at http://www.coinminingrigs.com and buy some BTC on Coinbase to diversify my investment. Buy BTC and mine LTC.

Hey thanks for chiming in miningdude.. I realize the nature of mining since i did some gpu mining with bitcoin..
What i meant when i asked if it was a good time to mine ltc was is there anything on the horizon in the litecoin world that may potentially reverse my inclination to mine the virtual currency. .

For instance if there was litecoin asic's coming that may put a damper on roi if i pulled the trigger on a 4 or 6 gpu rig now.

Anyway thanks for the input if i follow the guide ill use your links.

Zedicus, thanks for clarifying your question. There are no Litecoin ASICs in development at this time. Scrypt based currencies are designed to be much more ASIC resistant than SHA-256 currencies (Bitcoin). There are FPGAs in development, but even those won't provide the advantage enjoyed by Bitcoin miners who bought FPGAs last year. I would be very surprised if either of these technologies evolved to a sufficient level to push GPU miners out of the market in the next 12-18 months. Beyond that time frame, no one really knows. Hope this helps.

I've updated the 6x mining rig guide adding the R9 280x as the best alternative to the sold-out 7950 GPU.

I want to use this build, but I’ve read that each card (R9 280x) will generate 300Watts each, so they suggested 2x1600W PSU. Is this true?
And furthermore, let’s say I wanna do a 7xR9 280 rig using your base specs (Same mobo, CPU & RAM, only difference being 2 of your suggested PSUs and 7xR9 280s) what would I need to change?
I was going to get 6xhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FQJ077Q/ AND 6xhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0054CIL46 just in case. Is there anything else I must get? I also have newbielink:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032MT0OU/ [nonactive] two of those in my cart.

So basically, I want to do a 7xR9 280x rig. Essentially in short, my question is: what *all* do I need to accomplish this?

Which Sapphire 7950 model is good. There are mainly 3 models for Sapphire 7950 (ex Vibor).
Also put an image of the wiring all MB and others.

Thanks.

Hello,

one thing I don't really get - how it's only 600$/month with this configuration? It should produce roughly 4500kH/s, right? That gives about 60$/day ( newbielink:https://www.litecoinpool.org/calc?hashrate=4500&difficulty=1734.16053808&power=1800&energycost=0.20&currency=USD [nonactive]), meaning that even with difficulty increase, you still should make at least twice as much?

aleksandrd, I stay on the conservative side when quoting expected returns, especially since most people don't understand the way price drives difficulty. With a large jump in Litecoin value, more people start mining which pushes the difficulty up faster than usual. So, while a calculator may show you making $1,800 in one month, this will most likely not happen due to higher than normal jumps in mining difficulty.

Completely updated the 6 GPU guide today with the following changes:
 • AMD R9 270 GPU's (450Kh/s). The 7950s are impossible to find and other alternatives are overpriced. The R9 270 provides the best value currently. Low power usage (175 watts/ea when under-volted) also allows for a
 • cheaper 1300 watt PSU.
 • Motherboard changed to ASROCK H81 Pro BTC (motherboard designed specifically for GPU mining).
 • Other slight component changes to get the best prices for components.
This is now a 2,700 Kh/s 6 GPU mining rig that will cost only $1.8k USD to build at current prices.
