Hello,

I'm after a little guidance, any info would be very helpful, i'll try to explain what has happened so far (sorry for the length):

I've had a small rig setup for 2 months now working perfectly it consists of 2x XFX R9 290's connected to a MSI Z77A-GD65, powered by a 850w PSU running win 7 x86 pro, the cards are not in a case they are mounted via powered risers in a custom made frame which is outside in my garage so its nice and cold with the fans running at 70% the GPU's are around 68 degress.

I've been getting on average a stable 825khs from each card (1600 khs+ from the miner) (no hardware errors or anything like that)
i've been using cgminer 3.7.2 with the below settings

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u amull3n.1 -p xx -I 20 -w 512 --thread-concurrency 20454 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-fan 70

So........ I decided the time has come to expand my miner i bought 2x more XFX R9 290's (exactly the same model) and an additional 850w PSU.

I've connected up the cards and had some issues getting cgminer to launch without disabling the all the GPU's, I got cgminer to try and work out the thread-concurrency which it calculated at 30592 which didn't work i deducted 2048 from this figure until it finally worked on 12160

All 4 cards work but they only get an average rate of 485kh's after alot of twaeking with intensity levels, gpu memclock and gpu engines speeds the absolute best i could get was 515khs from each card, these are the settings:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u amull3n.1 -p xx -I 13 -w 256 --gpu-engine 1005 --gpu-memclock 1250 --thread-concurrency 12160 --gpu-fan auto

If i increase the intensity to anything above 13 i either get lots of hardware erros or it crashes after about a second and registers 1x gpu at a huge temp of 511 degrees. if i increase the thread-corruency any higher it just disables all the GPU's on launch.

So obviously i'm disappointed to get just over 2000khs from 4x r9 290's

I've spent hours tweaking settings but this is the best i could get.... surely i'm doing something wrong? i've also tried older versions of cgminer, testing the new cards individually on the new psu everything works fine but it makes no difference when i connect all 4 together i can only get the poor performance.

If you need anymore info please let me know...... i'm seriously considering buying another motherboard, cpu & ram to get the best from my four cards if i can't improve on what its currently at.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Adam

Hi thanks for your help

It doesn't like the thread concurrency it will only work on 12160 with the other commands you posted it gets upto 750khs but it accepts hardly any work most of the time it HW errors rapidly and eventually after a minute or so it locks up.

Any more ideas?

Perhaps somewthing wrong with the 2 powersupplies working together? Have a look at this and decide if you need to change you setup a bit.

Alternatively you could buy an additional bord, some ram and a CPU and run 2 separate riggs (that is if the power supplies are the reason for your issues.

SOLVED well almost, even though my win 7 x86 install was a new build i decided to rebuild it as x64 to take advantage of the full 8GB of RAM i've read a few things that the ram links somehow with the TC. I used the same cgminer version 3.7.2 and the same drivers as before (but x64) and now it works perfectly with 4x R9 290's before my thread concurrency would only go to 12160 and when the inensity was increased over 13 it would HW error constantly. Since the rebuild the thread concurrency goes all the way up to 59328 and with the intensity on 20 its running a dream with no errors at all :-) i've set powertune to 20 --gpu-engine 960 and gpu-memclock 1500 im getting 830 - 850 from each card   The only issue i have left is a windows one i think, if i add a 5th r9 290 to the rig device manager shows it as having a hardware error (Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems) but the card works fine if i swap it with another one in the rig, very odd i will have to google it, xLightcoinx i think you are spot on already as its always one of the two cards on the 2nd PSU which causes the device manager issue (the psu not connected to the motherboard)Hope this post will help some future readers, thanks for your help guys
